Bachelor of Medical Science, Doctor of Medicine

Bachelor of Medical Science / Doctor of Medicine at the University of Tasmania is a 5-year degree program.

Once you've completed the course, you'll be eligible for provisional registration to work in approved hospitals whilst undertaking training as an intern for one year. On successful completion of your internship you can gain full registration to work in Australia and New Zealand and can choose, if you wish, to study in an area of specialisation, whilst continuing to work.

A UCAT mean score greater than or equal to the 50th percentile (combined scores of the 4 cognitive sections, i.e. first 4 sections and excluding the situational judgement test).

Any applicants who meet the above criteria will be ranked by their ATAR score.

Interviews are not part of the selection process.

Graduate entry pathway

Each year there will be 25 places available for graduate entry. About 50% of these places will be for students studying the Bachelor of Medical Research.

General graduate entry pathway

Applicants must have:

Within 10 years prior to commencement in the Medicine Program, completed a Bachelor (AQF Level 7) degree or higher from an Australian education provider; OR
Within 10 years prior to commencement in the Medicine Program, completed a Bachelor (AQF Level 7) degree or higher from an International education provider, and maintained continuous registration for 5 years prior to commencement in the Medicine Program with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) or with an Australian State Veterinary registration authority.

All applicants in the General Graduate Entry Pathway are required to have attained a minimum unweighted Grade Point Average of 6.5 in a completed Bachelor (Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7) degree or higher, as well as a minimum score of 50 in all three sections of the Graduate Medical School Admissions Test.

Applicants will be ranked by combining the overall Graduate Medical School Admissions Test score and unweighted Grade Point Average.

Bachelor of medical research preferred pathway

Students studying the University of Tasmania's Bachelor of Medical research may attempt to enter the program during their final year of their Bachelor degree.

In the year prior to commencement in the Medicine Program, completed the Bachelor of Medical Research at the University of Tasmania with no failures and no credit for recognition of prior learning.

Ranking based on the cumulative percentage average units contributing to the award of the Bachelor of Medical Research.
